2023 Student Exhibition
Attending concerts is something my friends and I frequently do as a way to bond over our shared passion for music. When tasked with selecting an object to study, my well-worn concert shoes stood out as the perfect representation of these experiences. Their visible wear and tear not only reflect our countless adventures but also symbolize the timeless appeal of Converse shoes.

To capture the essence of this object, I conducted extensive research on both the shoes and the cultural significance of the brand. I meticulously photographed the shoes from various angles, producing a series of images that formed the foundation for 20 distinct compositions. Each composition was thoughtfully designed to emphasize the wear on the shoes and evoke the history of a brand that has endured for generations.

HAND MADE COLLAGES
It’s always refreshing to return to making things by hand and take a break from staring at a computer all day. The purpose behind these collages was to use assets such as photos, typography, and shapes to create a set of over 70 different compositions. We were given just 3 to 5 minutes to complete each one and were not allowed to edit or correct a finished collage. This constraint forced us to focus on creating rather than overthinking.

INSIGHTS
The project demanded a high level of organization and attention to detail, particularly in managing the research, photography, and design process. A key challenge was working exclusively with black-and-white photography, which limited distractions and encouraged a deeper focus on texture and form. This constraint ultimately enhanced the clarity of the compositions, resulting in a visually cohesive body of work that showcases the relationship between type and imagery.

I learned a great deal about the importance of generating different ideas and variations. This process helped me understand how to apply the knowledge I've gained from past classes to make informed decisions about what I feel is and isn't working for each new piece I'm creating.
